National Hockey League

Articles focused on the games, players, and teams around the NHL.

Tampa Bay and New Jersey will play in the first round. Tampa Bay finished with the best record in the East while New Jersey took the final wild card spot. New Jersey swept the season series, 3 games to 0. However I predict Tampa Bay to win this playoff series.
The Vegas Golden Knights have had the most unexpected expansion season in NHL history, however for this Cinderella story to continue well into the playoff season, the Knights will have to face what most would consider their toughest opponent of the season, the Los Angeles Kings.
Fast forward 5 years. The Leafs have since removed all remnants of that 2013 team – players and management. Only 5 players remain from that team – Kadri, JvR, Bozak, Komarov, and Gardiner.
With the pre-playoff break, I wanted to delve down and try to see exactly what we have here. I'm going to look both at this year's stats alone and the past 2yrs stats together to try and get a clear picture of what our players actually are. These are all the stats that I've learned to depend on as the most useful and accurate ones to assess hockey performance. This is my best assessment of the roster we have - and I'd love to hear your guys' own assessments as well. Feel free to add your...
First of all this is my personally opinion on how to get the game even more intersting and fascinating for fans all over the world. This proposal are going to get teams involved for more than just the regular season and will generate the sense of rivalries all over the league. Bring in another final expansion team and cement the number of teams playing in the league at the number of 32. From there on, if a city wants to host an NHL team they should come up with a better project and claim a...
Now that the 2017-18 season is near its end and the team's late-season acquisitions have all made their case to be considerations for next season's roster, it may be reasonable now to evaluate where everyone might fit on the team in 2018-19. With players such as Brendan Leipsic and Tyler Motte signed next season -- and having shown their worth through a handful of games late this year -- we have less room than we might have previously anticipated. Additionally, rookies next year may include...
As a Red Wings fan, I've become acquainted with the phenomenon of fans cheering for losses. I go to a fan forum, wanting to be happy about beating the pants off the Pens, and encounter a bunch of people who are mad that we won. I understand their reasoning given the draft rules, but I think it's a counter-intuitive and frankly very annoying way to "cheer".
There are a lot of potential Big Stories of teams winning the draft Lottery. With almost every team, there is a big story here. Which would be the biggest?
Kopitar playing in his 12 season (leading scorer in 10) for LA Kings is having his best season yet. He currently has 80 points (29 G 51 A) and has 29 point lead on the second LA kings scorer Drew Doughty (51 P). His most common linemates are Dustin Brown (48 P, third leading scorer) and Alex Iafallo (25 P, undrafted rookie). Their last season leading scorer(Jeff Carter) got injured in the start of this season in which he played only 16 games. Their second line center was most commonly Adrian...
I read a recent thread about how scoring was up the highest it has been since 2005-06. Thought it would be interesting to take a look at how many players in each season hit 1.00 PPG or higher, becuase it seemed like a lot were on pace this year. Below shows the average goals per game scored for each season and how many players finished with 1.00 PPG or above in those years. 2012-13 was higher than normal likely due to players being able to maintain a higher pace through a shortened season....
The NHL scoring race this year has been so volatile that it seems every few games the rankings shift dramatically behind the current points leader. Taylor Hall, Johnny Gaudreau, Connor McDavid, Blake Wheeler, Claude Giroux, Alex Ovechkin, and Anze Kopitar are among the players all leading their teams in scoring and in hot pursuit of the points scoring lead. However, three players at the top of the scoring race are clearly distinct from the rest of the pack: Nathan MacKinnon, Evgeni Malkin,...
The Hart Trophy is synonymous with MVP. And MVP, is kind of ambiguous. You could interpret it as the best player i.e most valuable player in the league, or 'most valuable to his team'. There is a distinction, it usually goes to the best player in the league. Kucherov is probably the best player in the league in this year, but Tampa is so stacked with other elite players like Stamkos/Hedman/Vasilevsky. You could argue he shouldn't be punished for having good teammates, too. Malkin is...
The NHL has done well with selling tickets at all the outdoor games the past 10 years but they may have a real headache in trying to sell tickets in South Bend, Indiana next year. Up until now every outdoor game in the US had teams that were a reasonable drive to the venue but Boston is 900 miles from South Bend and that drive in late December is risky because of possible lake effect snow from Buffalo to Toledo on I-90. I-80 is an alternative but still risky that time of year. Chicago is...
Hey everybody -- inspired by that ESPN article from a few days ago, I decided I'd make my own rankings. Hope you enjoy. Poile - NSH (The master of re-signings. Jarnkrok, Forsberg, Arvidsson, Ekholm, Turris are all signed to incredible deals. The guy can build a helluva team and has the guts to trade.) Yzerman - TB (There's a reason that Team Canada always hires Stevie Y. Those Hedman, Kucherov, Stamkos, Vasilevskiy, and Stralman deals are insane and he's amazing at getting depth players...
Yeah, that's his real name. OUTSIDE of his contract of course, and even then there comes negative talk with that.... Going into the playoffs and such there will be no EIchel talk, so felt like making this thread to discuss the injustice that is his pro-career to this point. I had to ask who else has had a rougher ride then a star of this calibre from the beginning of his career? You could even call it BUFFALO luck. But look, I'm not one to cry because every team has a history of being...
There is a misconception on HF that keeps popping up this season about the Atlantic division. While it is a weak division overall, the misconception is that the top 3 teams (and Toronto more specifically) are where they are points wise because they get to “beat on” the five other Atlantic teams, all of which are struggling to one degree or another. This has been repeated numerous times on these boards and is used to disregard the top 3 Atlantic teams because they supposedly “benefit from...
Interesting question I think. To me video review has been a complete failure. The point is to get calls right, now they have created more confusion than they have ever helped. Players are frustrated and so are fans. At least when a ref made a wrong call on the ice people understood that they are just human and miss stuff, but people don't have patients for when you have minutes to review and still get it wrong. Here are a couple of the main reasons I think it has been a failure. 1. The...
I hate that bad teams are rewarded with high draft picks, talented prospects who those poorly managed franchises often ruin. Athletes who spent their whole lives working their butt off to achieve their dreams to be mismanaged and have their development stunted by incompetent management. Go to the sub-forums of teams who aren't even basement dwellers but bubble teams, and you'll see a bunch of fans actively cheering against their favorite team so they get a better shot at the loser prize....
On January 19th 2017, Red Fisher passed away. Red spent his storied career covering hockey in Montreal from 1955 to 2012. He was admitted into the Order of Canada on December 29th 2017, one of Canada's highest national civilian honors. Here are some of the remembrances by HF members to commemorate his life and career. Something truly worth posting about.. Hats off to you Red! You were a sports writing legend who covered the mighty Habs in their legendary years. "Show me the players"...
After watching the Rangers face the Islanders at the Garden, once again coming out flat, and giving up routine Grade A chances, I wanted to do a little more digging into how poor this team is. 46.46 CF% (30th in NHL) 46.92 FF% (28th in NHL) 47.25 SF% (29th in NHL) 422 High Danger Chances Allowed (4th in NHL) It's clear that the team struggled in October, December and now January. They're currently in a wild card spot mostly because of the efforts of Lundqvist/Pavelec. Pavelec, to his...
I've long wondered why the NHL doesn't have a unique award for the defenseman who scores the most points in a season. Benefits: Honors the best offensive defender in the league. A perfect corollary to the Selke Award, which honors the best defensive foward. Unlike the Selke, it's not a subjective award. He who gets the most points wins. There's precedent for creating new awards. The Rocket Richard was introduced in 1999. The trophy was donated by the Montreal Canadiens to the NHL. Are you...
General gameday discussion for January 7th 2018.
If you're a New York Islander fan who wants to keep John Tavares, you're probably wondering if the universe is conspiring against you, these days. In November, the Islanders won seven of eight games to improve to 15-7-2. But evening during that hot streak the Isles gave up at least three goals five times. Since then, the Islanders have been awful, going 5-12-2. In those 19 games, the Islanders have given up 78 goals. They've dropped five straight games in regulation, allowing 25 goals....
Exactly as it says on the tin. Lot of deserving candidates so far. Hard to pick in several positions. My Hart voting for example would for sure be in a different order (I would vote Tavares higher for Hart than Stamkos+McDavid... but I think Stamkos has objectively been more 'outstanding' as an individual.) Here are mine: AS-1: Giroux - Stamkos - Kucherov Hedman - Doughty Vasilevskiy AS-2: Ovechkin - MacKinnon - Kane Pietrangelo - Klingberg Crawford AS-3: Gaudreau - McDavid -...
Watching the Wings win three straight is kind of rough. It's been great to see the kids play well. Larkin. Athanasiou. Bertuzzi. And Mantha and Frk played well last night, too. At the same time, a three- game win streak isn't helping our lottery odds (though I'm beginning to think that other than Dahlin, it doesn't really matter where we pick as long as we're top 10). I've heard Paul Woods and other Red Wings broadcasters talking about the bright future. I think it's a crock of shit. The...
