Prospects

All about the young players preparing to enter the NHL.

I firmly believe that this software can be a useful tool to support the evaluation of prospects, in fact, I would even go as far as to say that it has the potential to give better results than the standard way of evaluating players.
Free downloadable 2018 NHL Draft Guide. I spent the year watching hundreds of hours of these prospects in actual games. At the very least, I’m just trying to give my take. I operated on the simple idea: set up a board as I see it for who I think projects as the best NHL players. I have a few international blind spots that I did my best with, but this isn't a true "draft ranking" so much as my personal board.
Scouting evaluation; Skating speed, edge work, shooting, puck control, offensive IQ, competitiveness, physical play, defensive play. (Those evaluations are greatly impacting the statistical evaluation, both sources of data are tested again each other in different ways.)
Here are my top 100 skaters for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft complete with scouting reports.
During the summer, we've been running Organizational Prospect Ranking polls to see where HFBoards ranks each team's prospect pool. Along with HFBoards, I've also included some other media sources often cited around this site, and have added some tables to show analysis on the rankings. HFBoards Ranking: 1. Buffalo - 66% 2. Vancouver - 41% 3. Carolina - 76% 4. New York Islanders - 37% 5. New York Rangers - 35% 6. Philadelphia - 39% 7. St. Louis - 37% 8. Colorado - 31% 9. Detroit - 33% 10....
I’ve decided to go for a different “theme” each month, and this month is gonna be the big one, my top 200 prospects eligible for the 2018 draft. There are some overagers and unheard of prospects to most included, but that’s what you get when making a list of 200. I’ve seen ALMOST every single player on this list at least once, with some just a highlight or good word put in. Thanks for the continued support on my monthly endeavour. If you have any ideas on what type of ranking I should do...
Top 125 prospects for the 2018 NHL draft.
These are the results of the 2018 mock draft done by the team boards of HF. Every fan base selected the player they would want to draft based on who was still available.
After Rasmus Dahlin went all season last year as the consensus first-overall 2018 NHL Draft choice, it is quite obvious that sometimes players are too far ahead of their peers to be caught. For a while, it seemed that Jack Hughes would be a similarly advanced player whose status as his year's first-overall pick would be unchallenged. However, having studied many of the forwards touted as current first-round selections, I have come to the conclusion that Jack Hughes isn't that far ahead of...
Over the past 20 days, I've conducted a set of daily polls to roughly determine who HFBoards thought were the top 20 goaltending prospects in the NHL. The requirements to be included were the goalie had to be under 25 years of age at the starting date of the first poll, and the goalie must have fewer than a total of 20 NHL games of experience. In conclusion, these are the results: #1: Carter Hart (PHI) [27.4%] #2: Ilya Samsonov (WSH) [47.7%] #3: Igor Shestyorkin (NYR) [34.7%] #4: Ilya...
Last year I wrote a similar but shorter Hlinka write-up for the Flyers board. Thought I’d share this year's version with you (mostly) fine people. It's in the attached PDF, so you don't have to scroll for 40 days and 40 nights! Been writing this and mulling over the rankings for the last month; obviously prospect watching for longer. I feel reasonably comfortable with where I'm at in my evaluating; maybe the most comfortable in August/September since I've been doing this. If you know me --...

New York Rangers Top Prospects as voted by HF Members.
So before reading this, there's a few things I'd like to say just to clear confusion and FAQ's. -There are no goalies in this ranking, I'm not a goalie scout, and I'm not very good at evaluating them! -The MAX number of games played in the NHL to be included is 25. I could have missed out on a few guys but I tried. -This is purely my opinion using my own scouting, sorry if your team's player isn't high enough. This includes 2018 drafted prospects. Thanks for reading; comments, questions and...
As a bit of a goal this year, I've decided to throw up some early write-ups based on my notes so far throughout the year. Here they are, so let me know what ya think. 1. C Jack Hughes - U18’s, USNTDP A dynamic offensive player with electrifying skill who plays a smart and deceptive game, using his shifty skill to fool defenders and push the pace with strong vision and a good shot. 2. RW Kaapo Kakko - TPS, Liiga Speedy Finnish winger whos dazzles off the wing with a skillful offensive...
My top 31 picks for the 2018 NHL Draft with scouting reports for each player.
Prospect rankings for the 2018 NHL Draft.
My annual preview of draft-eligible Russian prospects has arrived. At the beginning of the season I made a statement that this is a "boom or bust" year and actually I think I rarely have been as precise as that time.
September sees the start of leagues and the start of hockey again! Thankfully I've gotten my list in better order to start the season than the last few years. Defensemen have had their handedness added for convenience. 1. C Jack Hughes 2. RW Kaapo Kakko 3. C Alex Turcotte 4. LW Alex Newhook 5. C Dylan Cozens 6. C Kirby Dach 7. LD Bowen Byram 8. C Trevor Zegras 9. RW Vasili Podkolzin 10. LD Phillip Broberg 11. LW Peyton Krebs 12. C Raphae Lavoie 13. LW Danil Gutik 14. LD Matthew Robertson 15....
3 months away from draft time! This is when it starts to get exciting folks. The next edition should be May, and should also come with a mock draft post lottery! As always, let me know what you think, and who you think should be higher, after all, we’re all different people and therefore see different things. 1. D Rasmus Dahlin 2. LW/RW Andrei Svechnikov 3. LW/RW Filip Zadina 4. RW Oliver Wahlstrom 5. D Adam Boqvist 6. D Quinn Hughes 7. D Noah Dobson 8. D Evan Bouchard 9. LW Brady...

Top 100 NHL Affiliated Prospects 6. RW Eeli Tolvanen...5. C Casey Mittlestadt...4. D Miro Heiskanen
As I start to watch more games and evaluate more prospects, the lists will grow in size, much like previous years. This list will not be pinpoint accurate as I'm only in the beginning stages, so suggest some players you think I should watch more of! 1. C Jack Hughes 2. RW Kaapo Kakko 3. C Alex Turcotte 4. LW Alex Newhook 5. C Kirby Dach 6. C Dylan Cozens 7. D Bowen Byram 8. C Raphael Lavoie 9. D Matthew Robertson 10. C Ryan Suzuki 11. D Victor Soderstrom 12. LW Maxim Cajkovic 13. C Trevor...
These are my top 100 rankings. They are my own. I watch a lot of hockey. I read a lot(and I have certain people's opinions that I take into account), but these rankings are from my own observations. This is the order I would draft these guys in(as of the end of February) I just finished putting this together, so I will update at the conclusion of the Memorial Cup. Please feel free to comment....especially if you see a glaring omission(I may not have seen every player - and I also don't get...
As my 2nd last ranking, I can say that this is one of my favorite classes ever. I love some of the plays and think there are some real dark horse players in here. Next month for my final ranking, it will include and in depth write up on all 217 of my projected draft picks. Enjoy, and as always feel free to ask any questions. 1. D Rasmus Dahlin 2. LW/RW Andrei Svechnikov 3. LW/RW Filip Zadina 4. D Quinn Hughes 5. RW Oliver Wahlstrom 6. D Evan Bouchard 7. D Adam Boqvist 8. D Noah Dobson 9. C...
