If the Oilers, say, promised a one-way deal coming out of that ELC for 19-20 (and beyond), that would probably be enough to entice Persson to give up the bidding war.

Otherwise, he's putting up way too much risk. If he regresses back to a Swedish Div 1 player, all of a sudden there's no contract coming to him from anyone.

Well you could also argue that if he does regress, at least he got the signing bonus. It's almost like the free frogourt discussion on Simpsons from way back.

Joel Persson missed the first pre-season game, apparently he got injured in practice. There is no information on how serious.

Anyhow, I thought I'd bump this thread for some info from Joel on general matters (source shl.se) and also specifically why he signed this contract with EDM (since it was discussed here):

Sucks about him getting injured. This is a really interesting prospect. Purely boom or bust but he was free so if he does anything at the AHL or NHL level it's a big win.

Dude has one of the most impressive jumps in ability between seasons I have ever seen.

Personally I think a lot of that jump for Persson is because he's playing with Pettersson who's looking like he will be a phenomenal prospect and likely Eichel/Matthews level imo. Bastard Canucks got a good one there.

Hopefully Persson continues that trajectory and can eventually make an impact at the NHL level.

It’s not like every player lit it up. He still doubled the 2nd highest scoring dman on the team

I'm not saying it wasn't an impressive season he had... but Pettersson was in on 24 of the 34 goals that Persson scored or assisted on. That's 71% so I'm just saying the "Pettersson effect" is something to be aware of when looking at his stats from last season.
