Barrett Hayton going top 10 shows just how desperate some teams would be for centers

he's like Bo Horvat from the info I've read

I can verify that he did have McAvoy 3rd. He repeated it many times prior to the draft, similarly to how he is talking about guys like Merkley, Addison and Nordgren now.

If Hayton and Kotkaniemi are off the board by #10, then a very good D or winger will be there at 10 for us.

It'll entirely depend on the Habs imo. If they go with a dman I think just Kotkaniemi will be gone before the Oil pick, but if they go way off the board and take Kotkaniemi then I could see Hayton possibly going to Chicago/NYR.

And Bo Horvat was a pretty good pick.

McAvoy blows Smith away in almost every single category. Just watching Smith conjures up a Taylor Chorney with slightly worse skating. Im sorry, there is absolutely nothing about his game that will help the Oilers within the next 5 years minimum. His high point total will not equate to the NHL. He is not a great skater, he is small, has a bad shot, not a great passer, his hockey IQ may be above average hence his high point total. Other then that , this is NOT what the Oilers need. A small , not dynamic defenseman. Its ludicrous he would be considered over Boqvist. You take that chance on Boqvist 10/10 times. You get him on a training regiment, you get him a defensive coach and you work with him. You dont take a lesser player.

The Oilers need to take a chnace on drafting a dynamic defeseman and work with him every single day. There hasn't been one in this city since Coffey and Pronger. Ty Smith isnt going to impress or tilt the ice for anyone.

He's setting himself up for less disappointment.

It's a win win. If We end up drafting ty smith he's already gotten his grievances in order, if we don't it makes the pick that much better.

That being said, I would still be severely disappointed with Smith, especially with one of the higher ceiling players available. Bob and Gregor have been pumping Smith's tires and it makes me sick, especially knowing how this org uses Media to prep the fans for disappointing moves.

In my mind, you do not take Ty Smith in the top 10. Maybe 11-12.

You went over the top in a big way though, with that specific sentence he quoted.

Then you put a fwd vs a D, probably.

The difference between 10, 11 and 12 almost non-existant. Then you go for need, i.e. D.

Why is LD a need? We should draft anything but a LD.

Eh. We need high-end defensive prospects, full stop. Smith has the tools to easily be considered that. The issue I have is taking him over the amazing RHD options that may fall to us...especially Boqvist.

So it's ok if we took him 11 or 12th but no way would you take him 10th?

Not with the better players available no.

Dahlen, Svech, Zadina, Boq, Wahl, Tka, Kot, Hughes, Bou, and Dob all better players.

If those players are all gone by 10, then you can take Smith.

There are absolutely Dumb opinions, like yours comparing Smith, a top-15 rated prospect in a deep draft with a player who's been a marginal NHLer for years and never had anything reassembling the upside of Smith.

I get it guys, the Oilers might be interested, so many of you have decided he's garbage and is terrible, but none of that is true and it's like just a larger personal bias you aren't dealing with.

I think at 10, if you have a fit, take that player. I mean we picked MPS at #10 and thought we got a steal that day.

Unless someone like Hughes somehow falls to us, I think you can make a case for any of about 7 players for the Oilers to take.

This is isn't like when I was adamant the Oilers had to pick Draisaitl if we didn't get Ekblad. :p

Why is it dumb? All those guys are better prospects. If the Oilers take Smith at 10, it'll be a bit of a reach.
