Lol I hate this ****. Somehow getting assists is a negative for a defender when it comes to Gardiner.

Or maybe Gardiner is very good at transitioning the puck up the ice out of his zone and therefore gets a lot of assists. The Leafs also shoot for tips like insane for a lot of those assists Gardiner got were on shots.

savard is a much better defender in his own zone and he is a low supplied rhd. leafs add for sure

Wrong. Handedness is nowhere near as valuable as Gardiner's transition and offensive game. also their goals/chances allowed are pretty similar, only Gardiner faces tougher competition

man oh man just watch some games. People take these advanced stats and twist them constantly. Maybe Gardiner does face tougher competition on a weaker blueline but he also does it in more favourable situations while also being a turnover machine. Both have their faults and Gardiner is better offensively but Savard is better defensively no question

I mean you've also watched Gardiner backwards skate into the corner when defending 2 on 1s on several occasions right? Because I know I have. The dude is just not good defensively, the stats can make it look a lot better sometimes but he is prone to some of the worst defensive mistakes and turnovers in the entire league. Savard is much more dependable defensively

I think value wise they're close to a wash with Savard maybe having an edge due to contract status

advanced stats don't prove anything. gardiner is much worse defensively than savard.

They prove more than you stating that with no supporting evidence

Columbus needs a top 6 center more than a defender. Regular Season Bob showing up for the playoffs wouldn't hurt either.

So just say you have never watched instead of quoting advanced stats. Watch a game and tell me who he is up against and who he is partnered with.

your eyes lie to you as much as stats do, if not more. That's why you need both. When you watch Gardiner, his mistakes stand out a lot more than his boring and safe good defensive plays. That's why you remember those most. Everything he does is recorded and tracked as evidence, and it's more telling and indicative of his true impact than what you see. No person can really know everything about a player's impact by watching them

Dude. Not even close enough to warrant a view. Most difficult minutes is Jones followed by Werenski

Why is it a “hard pass” if it’s terrible for the Leafs? That doesn’t make sense..

Parts of this I agree with but not all. I still put more weight into the eye test than fancy stats

Would rather have Savard than Gardiner, especially when handedness is taken into consideration.

Jenner had a rough season but he heated up towards the end. Johnsson is interesting but doesn’t strike me as someone we particularly need to move Jenner for.

Werenski doesnt play pk or the final minutes of the game shut down time. Jones gets pk/pp and even steength time so he has the most minutes period not nessasarily the toughest. Savard has been stuck with lesser pairings and has been used in a shut down role the past 2 years. There is no stat that is going to tell you what watching a handful of games will...

Majority of people who watch will agree. If you want a more informed opinion im sure you can find replays on YouTube somewhere.
