For sure. The strong connections between Vancouver and Tavares are undeniable. Clearly he is holding out on signing a deal with hopes of joining a team like the Canucks. I mean, the chance to play with cornerstone pieces like Sutter and Gudbranson. The opportunity to work in an organization as deftly and expertly managed as the Canucks are by Benning. To be able to join a team that travels more than any other - and to live in a City he has next to no connection with - and on top of all that, the Canucks routinely compete for a lottery pick or for the running for the worst team in the league.

The links are striking, and I think based on this, we can only conclude that Tavares will be a Canuck with the first few seconds of July 1.

I'm sure the Canucks will try....and Aquilini would throw godzillions at Tavares and his agent if the discussions ever got serious...even though it's not happening, you can't blame the Canucks for at least not taking a stab at it.

On to more realistic UFA targets, I see most posters seem to think that Bozek from the Leafs makes sense....but I note JVR is also set to hit free agency on July 1st...any potential interest from the Canucks in this scoring left winger, who's still a relatively low-mileage player?

JVR isn't coming here any more than Tavares. In-demand American UFAs don't sign for bad Canadian teams on the west coast.

Plenty have people have said they could see us signing Bozak but I don't think many have said they think it's a good idea.

How would you rate Vancouver's chances of acquiring Tavares? Favourite? Solidly in the mix? Long shot?

Long shot and that might even be being generous.........Why would he come here? There are much more attractive options for him. I'm not as down on Vancouver as a destination as some people however I feel that compared to Vegas and the Maple Leafs (2 of the front runners to attain his services should he decide to leave) that a bid by us - no matter if it were more money - just wouldn't be looked on as favourably - Certainly as one from Vegas - who could also conceivably add Karlsson.........and has a hell of a lot better shot at winning in the next 3 years than we do.

According to Sportsnet, Tavares is in serious discussion with the Islanders.....I'd expect some sort of announcement well before July 1st...I doubt he's going anywhere.

That makes a lot of sense to me. But I don't see it as very different from a post you accused of throwing a "pity party."

Well the difference is that I have the ability to see things objectively and praise management for good moves...........something those attending that event for the most part lack.......

That wasn't evident in the post you were responding to. It's why I asked you the question about the possibility of landing Tavares (to which, as I said, you responded entirely reasonably).

What pity party? I don’t give a rip about optimism or pessimism, those are emotions, not arguments. If you want to be optimistic go buy a Canucks towel and wave it in front of your tv during the next game. It’s next to useless on a discussion board.

You know, for the price of one Tavares, I wish Aquillini would just buy the Whitecaps instead. His playoffs-every-year approach would actually be ideal for MLS, and it would cost him substantially less.

Also reporting yesterday that the Canucks had started contract talks with Darren Archibald. Maybe a guy like Beagle is Plan B?

Beagle could be a good guy for the PK- it would allow Bo to really focus on his offensive game.

    Benning loves winners.

Signing him makes sense if you're planning to move Sutter.

A reporter talking about another teams UFA at this time of the year would just be spitballing... could end up being right though, in particular if Benning doesn't land that needed 2nd line center. Beagle is 32, has made relatively little during his NHL career, and just won the Stanley Cup. Yeah he could stick with Washington but a guy who's made roughly $10M over a 10 year pro sports career enter what's probably his last contract with a Stanley Cup as leverage is most likely going to prioritize the paycheque. So I'd expect his next contract would double his career earnings.

So whether or not it's a good thing, if the Canucks strike out on the other centers we'd be a pretty good as one of the organizations who will show him the money.

We're going to run Horvat-Sutter-Beagle as our top-3 centers.

Pay a huge premium to sign a completely unnecessary Cadillac 33 y/o 4th line center? Sounds about right.

I literally made a joke about Bennings signing Beagle to a Gagne contract in a thread awhile ago LOL. So classic it hurts.

We should be trading Tanev to facilitate this.

We should but won’t. Fortunately I trust Benning to target a few boat anchors in trade and UFA to ensure we sink to the bottom.

Oh god I can already envision the quotes from Linden and Benning after they sign Beagle, talking about how he can insulate young players and be able to face tough defensive matchups, how he's a winner and can help establish a winning culture.

I wouldn't hate the signing but it would put a ton of pressure on Petersson or Gaudette to produce as the 2C in their rookie year. Fingers crossed one of them can have a Barzal like season. This would allow Sutter and Beagle to be the defensive zone pivots and run the 2 PK units- allowing Bo to get more offensive ice time.
